" Mara Chembu "

"What .....!!! ???"
This was my expression when my Mom told me that they took a' Mazha Chembu ' to carry water on her first vacation with dad ! Plastic bottles didn't exist then .
Talk about being naive .. she admits this was her stage of innocence ..! which makes her more beautiful :)
Going back few years.., While we were having a conversation about travel tips ..she told that there was no availability of water bottles in those days. They had to carry a "Mazha Chembu " and fill water at ever station the train stopped. It was a very funny to visualize this.
I remember using Plastic water bottles all the time since my schooling began.
Science and Technology definitely has made our life easy .. I was a huge fan bottled water until I read an article how plastic can be harmful to us. The polymers in plastic release phytoestrogens ( or some compound resembling estrogen) which act like estrogen in our body.
I have bought a new water bottle which is totally made of steel from a website.
Unlike the other steel water bottles available in the market, the inner side of the water bottle I is completely steel .. Else, How good is a stainless steel water bottle if it is made of plastic inside!
I will post the picture of it sometime soon.
My friends tease me for using everything made of steel . After all, it is better than using plastic ones . Sometimes I wonder , world is round.. we will go back to the same place where we started from !

Love or Sympathy or Friendship?
It all began when I was talking to someone whom I believed to be my " friend" .
Realized that this person was talking to me out of sympathy for me being vulnerable to wrong decisions.
My thoughts whirled around these "factors" underlying the relationships.
After all , why call someone a friend when you have sympathy towards them ?
Perhaps, it was the "feel good "factor that was driving inside !
OR feeling important by others?

IE and Firefox display different web Layout.
Done with DIV tags. Now the challenge is why IE and Firefox display different layouts.
Guess, its 'coz Firefox has default settings to adjust the table borders and the style attributes of the DIV. I am wondering what went wrong?
Here is a solution that I figured out.

Miss Ya Priyanka!
It was an emotional moment for all our friends when Priyanka left today.
Hmm...I met her two years back in the TTU Indians community where she has advertised for a roommate. Priyanka, what do I write about his girl!!?? A friend in good and bad times, accomplice in crime, naughty, cute, sweet and many more adjectives. She is no different from every girl who day dreams a lot ! has romantic fantasies (err!). She is a Master of Relationships. She is many of her friends Love "Guru"/Consultant.
I remember the night when we slept in our Living Room during our first week in the new house.I was scared that night , when I saw her grey eyes in the dark.I start screaming at that sight. She understands this and asked me immediately, Did I scare you? ..and I told her ..ahh no ..no..I had just had a dream! :)
In the first few days she would play Bollywood songs in a high volume and blew off my ears.
As time passed by, we had some misunderstandings. She was first among us to say a 'Sorry' after the conflict. We share fond memories together.
At times we enjoy talking negative! She brings the worst out of me then.
Two years of our sweet journey as a stranger, roommate, friend, best friend continues.
I wish her All the Best for years to come.
P.S: We both look much better than in the above picture. :P
Just couldn't find the right picture with good background :)

Musical Genie in Me :)
I didnt realize that I liked PIANO so much until I started playing with it.I have started learning Piano !( by myselves ) with the help of online tutorials.
Thanks to Google! I have googled " Piano Tutorials" and about 2 million results came up.
Today I succesfully completed my second learning session.I am able to play the "Happy Birthday " music.
I will upload the music played by me.
God knows how many hours I have wasted browsing internet these days.
From today, I have decided to devote one hour a day to my music Madness :)
I am unbottling the musical genie inside me!(he he)
Watch out for my music!

Computer/ Laptop screen dances :)
My roommate had this issue of a dancing screen( wierd but true)!
After all the consultations with acquaintances, customer services and technicians, she was told that there could be some problem with the video card, power supply or the RAM.
She has figured out later that,it is the F11 button that is causing this dance effect. After running a key board scan it was apparent that the F11 button had a malfunction and was pressed deep into the keyboard.
So F11 button malfunction can also cause a screen to dance.
If you want to see this special effect on your screen ,press the F11 button and hold it for a while !

Internet Explorer Doesnt work but firefox does
I had this strange problem, Internet explorer and other browsers do not work but firefox does!
I suspected this could be because of Trojans in my computer.
Finally, my friend Mahendra did this,
Tools->Internet Options->Connections->Lan Settings and uncheck the "use a proxy server for detection". The proxy server settings works wrong when u r unsure of the actual proxy server IP. When we uncheck, it takes the default proxy settings into account.
Mozilla is a java browser which has different settings by default. Hence, it doesn't have this problem.
Thanks to Mahendra!

Google " Translate" feature
Hello Friends ,
I have learnt from my friend this new feature of the Google.
Google Translate. Its good for people like me who are language freaks .
I tried to traslate few words from hindi to english and from French to english . It works fine . But be advised , not to use poetic phrases as it ruined the meaning of the poems.
Here is way to test,
Type few words in some language and get the meaning in english . Now,copy these enlgish lines and paste and translate it to the langauage that you used before.
Its not what you typed!
However, I found this feature good for basic translations.
How are you ?
Whats the price of this? etc.
I would keep this feature on my i-phone when I visit a non-english speaking country .
I am sure it would help me a lot.
Check this out

Review " Stuff of Thought"
A picture is worth thousand words but an imprecise verbal description can lead to formation of a various mental images. Description about space should be proper and admirable, yet it is perceived by different people in different ways. Imprecision in verbal description of space has serious consequences like airplane accidents.
Discrepancy between the movement in space and the language in space occurs in brain. Brain circuit is complex with the visual brain there is “what” system which goes back to front. Visual brain registers letters, words, and pictures. Damage to this part can cause dyslexia. In our brain from back to top where system which helps keep track of objects locations.
“What” system, “where”system are duplicated left and right. In English we can use about eighty prepositions and some nouns to describe the space. But the difference in the description of an object in space comes due to changes in the geometry and shape of the object.
Ideally, there are only six pieces of information required to locate an object in space i.e. spacial positions. Disparity exists because of difference between geometry of shape and geometry of the location. Specifying a shape of an object requires many pieces of information. But location in space is relatively easy. Spatial terms are highly polysemous. Spatial prepositions over can refer to a path of matrix.
Spatial distinctions are digital and binary. For example, words that are used to describe such as “here”, “there”, “either-or”. Topological concepts coded in language are contact, containment, and attachment. Every matter has height, length, breadth but pretend it doesn’t have any dimensions.
I tried to experiment this notion on my friend , whom I asked to describe a stapler that in space to me as telling to me on phone how it looks , so that I have to find it once I enter the room.
I showed her the stapler, and asked her to describe it as if she was telling it to me over phone imagining that she and I don’t know what the object is and that the stapler is hanging in space with no gravity!
1) In her words “ Ujwala ,There is some black rectangular thing in the room with
steel layer inside it. Looks like movable because there is a shaft which joins of one its two ends.”
I wondered if I could really figure it out what it is when I enter the room.
Pinker stated in the book that, one reason for difference in the descriptions is due to difference in the languages spoken.
My friend is non- native English speaker. Also, considering the fact that the she knows me, I have asked a stranger to describe the same.
2) I asked a student (a native English speaker) in the helpdesk in library the same thing, and she would tell me that she would describe the color, shape, dimension, things around it, functionality if she could use it. When I asked her , how she would actually say that, she told me “ there is a three dimensional (!!) two long bars attached at on one joint”
I wonder if they would have told me the same if the situation was more serious.
Schematic dimensionality of objects affects not only how we visualize them but also how we reason about them. Our minds can focus on the boundaries of the object as if they are the objects themselves.
By studying the ways verbs work, for instance, we can see how our minds categories actions. It turns out, curiously, that actions that work because of gravity are classified differently from those that use other kinds of force. For example we can "pour wine into the glass" but not "fill wine into the glass". We can extend the range of things we talk about. For example, note the spatial meanings of "inflation", "bottleneck" and "decline". We may be thinking about abstract matters, but we can't manage without the help of simple spatial notions. Different peoples think differently because brought up to speak different languages and hail from different ethnicity.
A word may have the identical conventional meaning in different descriptions and yet be taken as denoting very different things. This reminds me of a book that I have read recently in which it is mentioned that, When you speak to somebody there is a difference between “ what you think you have conveyed ” and “what you have actually conveyed” .When you listen to somebody “What you think of you have understood” and “ What you have actually understood”. This gap arises when you speak because of the wordings.
Pinker argues that all humans share a universal "language of thought" containing basic concepts of space, time, force and sorts of stuff. Not all spoken languages express these categories using identical grammatical constructions, but the same linguistic oddities keep popping up in unrelated languages and all societies have some way of marking these fundamental distinctions.
Pinker’s “ Stuff of thought “ is really thought provoking. These differences in describing and perceiving of the things or situations are critical in decision making and have a huge impact when decisions are made.

My first blog post Yay...Yay..Yay
Yay...Extremly excited on my first blog post ever .
I always considered thyself an introvert , yet expressive . I always had a penchant for writing (except in engineering exams :) ).During my 7 th grade I started with poems and short stories in my mother tongue telugu and few in English . This interest of mine declined with time.
During my undergrad' most of my friends were into blogs and social networking communities ,I never into those, mostly because I felt I was never a 'techie' . I still remember my friend teaching me how to open an internet explorer when I was a freshman :) .That day I understood two things. First that , I know computer and second my friend knows patience.
I see my friends, tweets, posts, threads ...who keeps twittering, facebooking, orkutting :) and also actors and actresses expressing their views in their blogs, which prompted me to start a blog .
So friends , I also have a BLOG . Keep checking my blog for updates on my interests , creativity and also my poems ( they are not that bad!) .
By the way , I have just discovered that , BLOG is the reverse of 'GLOBE'. I wondered where the letter 'e' has gone . The fact that its maintained on the internet justifies it.
Another thing I was excited about is my personal website www.ujwalakotti.info getting a new look!!
I will keep you posted on that.
